Your Questions About [embroidery]

Mandy asks…
Do I need to prewash my cross-stitch fabric before I begin stitching?
I’ve had problems with getting creases and wrinkles in my fabric before from my hands and the hoop, will pre-washing prevent this or is ironing afterwards the only way?
JerryAlexander answers:
I would not recommend taping the edges with masking tape – it’s not acid free and it ends up leaving a sticky, messy residue. You can baste a small hem on each side, but I prefer using pinking shears to cut around the edge of the fabric.
If you are using a hand dyed or overdyed fabric, you generally cannot wash it without ruining the dye effect. If you’re using a regular piece of linen, evenweave, Aida, etc., you don’t have to wash it ahead of time, but I would recommend washing it afterwards in a mild soap and cool water – never a detergent or something like Woolite. I use Ivory and a clean plastic bin that I keep strictly for washing my stitched pieces.
The best way to prevent creases and wrinkles in your fabric is to remove the hoop when you are not stitching on it. Also, regular handwashing will keep your piece cleaner.
I prefer to use scroll frames for stitching – it keeps the fabric taut and I don’t have to worry about creases or hoop marks. Http://www.stitchers-paradise.com/Scrolfrm/Scroll_Frames.htm
